Trials And Tribulations

June 29, 2011 07:20 by ehouston

For a while now I have been thinking about switching the look of my stores on Etsy and Artfire.  But changing up your branding is a tough decision.  Especially if at one time you felt like it was exactly what you wanted, needed and thought your image should be.  Well, I have known for quite some time that none of those things are true any longer and changes needed to “come ‘round real soon”.  The image was blurry, the text hard to read and the color scheme was all wrong.  I also recently received some feedback from a fellow Etsian that suggested the same thing.  It was unsolicited, but right on and gave me that much needed kick in the rear to make the changes happen.  I just hope that what I have come up with gets my point across, or maybe I should say, gives the right feel for my store.  Which, by the way, will most likely be freed from the strictly vintage items soon.  At least I am considering removing all of that stuff from the Etsy entity and posting it on Artfire instead.  That was my original intention when I opened up the second shop over at Artfire.  I think I will give that a go again as a “vintage only” store and make a decision about keeping both open by the end of the year.  My Etsy storefront would then be filled with my handmade products.

As for right now, well I would like to present the new brand look I am toying with for Kitsch Designs.

KD-Banner-RedFlowers-2011

Here is the basic idea.  The image has been adjusted and the text placement modified to fit the different banners and avatars that I use throughout the interwebz.  I have always liked a red and blue color scheme in muted vintage shades, so I decided to scan one of my favorite tablecloth prints and have some fun with it.  I realized that over time the style of my handmade items has morphed into a very “cottage with a modern edge” look (at least that’s what I call it) and I wanted branding that conveys the same feel.  The Etsy shop is updated so far, but I am still working on Artfire and this here ol’ blog.  The Mister will have to help me with all that darned programming that I don’t understand in the least in order to make any changes at this site.  In the meantime you can just ooh and aaww this posting, ‘kay?

Let me know, folks!  Do you like or hate?

Project Declutter

January 31, 2011 08:46 by ehouston

Yep, it’s in full effect around here.  I am sure I’m not the only one out there.  You know, we’re the ones that keep meaning to “do something” with that closet full of stuff, but we never seem to get around to it.  I have been hauling some of my “project” items around literally for nearly a decade.  The initial dumping started several years ago when I did an office revamp and then a short while later when I switched office rooms in our old house.  Then, of course I did another huge dump just before we moved, back in 2009.  As we accumulate items for our new place I keep getting the urge to let go of those old things that never see the light of day.  I mean, what is the point of having some cool vintage decor if it’s not on display?  Or, why keep that neat old vintage dress if your post baby, chunky butt is never going to slip into it?  It’s just time.  Time to let someone else have the fun and enjoy these things that we have loved, but are ready to pass on.  I’m dusting off the Ebay account and making it happen.  Hello Craigslist, you old b-stard!  My three victories on your site have me semi-patiently waiting for a few more.  Etsy and Artfire, you aren’t gonna know what hit ya!

Okay, now if I could just find time to take all those pictures.  ugh.

One of my vintage Valentine’s Day cards was featured in a recent Artfire Collection by The Candy Shoppe.  It’s called Winter Rich Hues and it makes me want to start getting ready for Valentine’s Day extra early.

Making And Crafts: Artfire

September 17, 2010 01:54 by ehouston

Many of you have probably visited my Etsy shop in the past, but you may not realize I also have a store over at Artfire.  I tried it out a while back during the beta phase and did okay initially.  With the Little Guy’s arrival all of my shops (as well as this blog) have suffered much neglect, but I am hoping to turn that around in the coming months.  When I opened my Artfire shop it was to showcase small vintage items mainly, with just a few of my handmade pieces.  Since they don’t charge fees in the same way as Etsy.com, I was hoping to expand a bit on my handmade pieces over there soon.

Artfire

Just to let you know, Artfire charges a monthly subscription fee only, has great built in stats systems and admins that fall over themselves to assist in any concern you might have.  The vibe is definitely different at Artfire and for a short time they are offering their Pro Account for only $5.95!  If you are looking to jump ship from Etsy, open another online presence or start up a completely new endeavor then check out the Artfire Group Deal they are running right now.

Artfire - I'm Giving It a Shot

January 17, 2009 11:22 by ehouston

I decided to try opening up a storefront on Artfire a couple of weeks ago.  It's the latest edition to the online handmade stores out there and it appears to have a pretty good fee system.  I figured that after about 7 months of selling on Etsy with very low overall sales, it was worth checking out a new venue.  My hope is that my items will be more visible due to the smaller number of current shops on Artfire.  Now, I just have to work on getting the word out.

Come check out my shop and all the others on Artfire!  It's kind of nice because when you run a search you do not end up with a completely overwhelming list of things to go through.  Plus, sellers can list up to 10 photos, which is great!
Happy Handmade Shopping!
