Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!

January 14, 2012 03:11 by ehouston

It finally happened. I put the “thank you” notes in the mail this week. Pretty pathetic second week of the new year event for a woman who buys her thank you cards at the end of the previous Christmas season, or at least before Thanksgiving, wouldn’t you say? Typically the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is spent cleaning up the Christmas decorations, because we are a family that believes in bad luck for the new year if they are still up after the first, and writing thank you notes. This year was no exception. Decorations were down well before heralding the new year. We even had these neat cards made through the preschool fundraiser, featuring my son’s artwork and they arrived the second week of November (if I remember correctly).

See!

Thank_You_Card

Cute, right?

So, what was my problem this year? I’m not really sure. Sometimes I think that the over planning or trying to get ahead of the game just kills the fun of the pannicky feeling you get with a ticking deadline.

For those of you out there that gave us something lovely, you done good, you done good! There were no rejects of any kind this time around. ;o) No matching sweaters, while perfectly nice, eliciting a snicker at the idea of wearing them together. Better yet, the plans for the Sear’s Portrait Studio appointment flashing in my mind and bringing a huge grin to my face. No, jumpers to put on my kid for a picture only and then to be hidden away in the back of the closet until he can no longer wear that size. (oh, I have never done that, have I?) And, we avoided gift cards to places we never shop- yeah! All in all it was a wonderful gifty time of year and we are grateful for all the generosity that was bestowed upon us.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Talk About Feeling Like A Fatty!

Yep, didn’t know it was even possible.

When you are done laughing let me know.

Like most Americans I have added “get in shape” to my list of resolutions.  But there is nothing like cracking a toilet seat under your fanny to really put the WHA-POW!! into that one for ya!

Have a great weekend and eat something sweet and really bad for me.  Please!

A Few Of My Favorite Gifts And Décor : 2011

January 4, 2012 08:22 by ehouston

This year our decorations were pretty minimal.  Tree, check!  Wreath on door, check!  Vintage tinsel tree up and decorated, check!  Nativity in place, check!  Aside from a couple of other items that we set out to enjoy, we did little more to transform our home.  I think that having two sickies in the house at the beginning of the month just sort of did me in.  While I continued to keep the household afloat, I decided that any additional pressure on myself to have some over-the-top holiday home would surely result in my succumbing to the worst of it.  So, I did the bare minimum and enjoyed the rest of the month, semi-illness free.  We did attempt luminaries along the street as part of our neighborhood tradition for the first time this year.  I say “attempt” because we lit them, went to a friend’s house for Christmas Eve dinner and returned two hours later to find them burned out.  I had no idea that the tea lights I bought were so crummy.  Oh well, maybe we will get it right next year.  The only new additions to our holiday home were the tiny train themed tree for my tiny man and this:

On the weekend after Thanksgiving I found this 20 foot strand of lighted garland, originally from Target for $19.99, at Goodwill for only $8.99.  Over the last two years our little card stand has become overrun with Christmas greetings (aren’t we popular!?!) and ended up looking really messy.  So, this year I hung the garland in the foyer around the opening to the formal living room.  As the cards came in we used clothespins to clip them in place.  The Little Guy loved having a say in where each one was placed.  Although, if it weren’t for a little coaching nearly every card would have been hung in the same spot roughly 2 feet from the floor.  This ended up being a favorite for all of us and I think we will continue this tradition going forward.

On Christmas morning my mom and her boyfriend surprised us with a fun and funky slab cutting board.

They had an artist friend of theirs carve it, complete with a heart in the eye and…

…the cutest curlie-q tail!

One of my most favorite gifts I have ever received arrived just before the big day and was created from one of my very crafty friends.

I mean really, Jennifer!  Could this be any cooler?

She used a neat old book with cool bike graphics to create a hiding spot for a pen and pad.

As you can see this girl that lives-and-dies-by-the-list has already put it to good use.  I have even used the old library card holder to stash other notes and…well, other lists!  Yes, it’s a sickness.

Hope you all had a great time and got everything on your list!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

December 19, 2011 08:36 by ehouston

That is all we hear about from our 2 year old and how many of each is Santa going to bring him for Christmas?!  Operation Patience and Unselfish Acts has been in effect since we started gift shopping, but I have missed the mark somehow.  I believe he thinks that as long as I have that little rectangle of plastic to slide through the “calculator” gizmo we are in business.  I pray this is just a phase.  Anywhoo- we set out to get our train fix this past Saturday and it was well worth the quick little jaunt to Midlothian Village.

IMG_1092

The River City 3 Railers have a train set up in one of the empty storefronts in the Midlothian Village Shopping Center.  There is a nice Christmas themed setting up front, around a tree and then toward the back of the space a much larger and more detailed layout depicting all different scenes.  I would have loved to have caught some shots of my Little Guy’s face when he saw the big set up, but unfortunately it was at table height and I had to hold him up to see.  I have yet to master the hold the camera out and take a pic of myself move, so I only captured him barely able to control himself at the scene down on his level.  He wanted to touch everything soooo bad, but he was good and respectful and we saw it all without incident.  An added bonus, their was a Santa roaming the shopping center and saying hi to everyone.  My Little Man walked right up, took his hands and promptly forgot all the things he wanted to add to his Christmas list.  He actually asked to go see Santa again last week because he remembered some more things that he wanted.  Again, with the “I need” and “I want”.  ugh…

It was a fun quick stop and I would highly recommend it to any other local parents with train aficionados in your ranks.  Bonus: It’s Free!  WOOT!

Teacher Christmas Gifts–DONE!

December 14, 2011 08:41 by ehouston

Whew!  I feel like this has been a week of burning the candle at both ends.  Why is it that you get a simple idea in your head and either it turns into something more than a simple idea, or the actual execution of the idea ends up being way harder than you thought possible?  Well, that is where I am with teacher gifts, but they are finally done.  Bought, jazzed up and wrapped!  yeah!

Jumbled-Box

The first one was for the chocolate loving shopper.  Since there was not much to do with this “theme-wise” I decided to just go decadent with the wrap.  I had this posh black tissue paper with dots and a large red and gold ribbon to finish off the box.  So, luxe!  I jumbled the card, but it says “Mrs. ______, We hope you find yourself something as special as you are to us!  Merry Christmas!  Your Class: _____, _____, ______”, so on and so on.  Oh yeah, these are the class gifts that I am putting together.

Jumbled-Mug

The associate teacher LOVES Starbucks, so I took the theme and went with it.  I found a cute reusable mug cozy on Etsy from Spirit of Giving and along with a gift card this one was wrapped up.  For fun I folded a note around the gift card, tucked it into the top of the empty mug and cut the ends to resemble a frothy drink.  The note is jumbled but reads, “Mrs. _____, These mugs are on us!  Merry Christmas!  Your Class: ____, _____, ____, etc..”

Here is a closer shot of the top.  I just made a slit using a craft knife.

I decided to give her package a posh look too with a gold bag, the same black dotted tissue and red and gold ribbon.  Ooh la, la!

And of course, they will each get one of these!  I’m sure they will be thrilled.  Ha!

Classmate Gifts Down…

December 12, 2011 07:40 by ehouston

Two teacher gifts to go!  I have been procrastinating getting to the last couple of items on my “room-mom” to-do list for our teacher gifts.  This morning I managed to tackle one and hopefully after carpool tomorrow I will knock out the second.  Just before lunchtime today we put these fun treats together for Liam’s classmates.

IMG_1060

Yes, their noses really do ring-a-ling!

IMG_1055

Once they are finished drying I plan to add a red ribbon bow holding a holly leaf shaped note with, “Merry Christmas, From: Liam”.  He was super excited about how these were coming together and did quite a nice job jabbing the jingle bell noses into the blobs of glue.  Ever the good little helper!

I can’t believe that this is my Little Guy’s last week of preschool until after the beginning of the year.  I cried my eyes out at losing him to his sweet teachers for a few hours each week, but now I have become spoiled by that “extra” errand and project time.

I hope I make it ‘til January!
