Budget? We Don’t Need No Stinking Budget!!

Ah, how I wish to utter those words whenever I have a project (or anything else in life for that matter) in mind.  But alas, I am ALWAYS on a budget.  During the holidays I spent a good bit of time perusing some of my most favorite blogs just to see what everyone out there is up to.  I was amazed at how many DIYers were still at it through the holidays and that got me to thinking about budgets.  As stated above, I am always budget conscious.  From grocery shopping to closet organization, hair cuts, painting a room…I am always looking for the cheapest way to get the look I want.  Unfortunately, as with many others out there I am sure, I have expensive taste.  So, often I will work to save up the money to get exactly what I want without compromise.  I just wondered about all those other folks out there.  How do they do it?  Do they really set aside the money before they start the project?  Or, like most of us here in America, do they credit card it and hope to pay it off in the future?  And, let’s face it, probably pay way more than the project is worth in interest over the next six months.  With the current state of the economy and our government creating an even bigger debt toll for us all to share in paying off I thought it would be nice to go back to the basics.  To create, redecorate and just live on less.

Now that the Mister and I have moved to Richmond, VA we have a larger and very different home from the one we had in Nashville, TN.  It is presenting all kinds of new decorating challenges.  Although our current home is much newer (built in 1992) than our last place (built in 1962) it was made to look like a vintage colonial.  We love the higher ceilings, crown moldings and hardwood floors.  Plus, the new electrical is to die for!  ;o)  But a lot of our furniture is Danish modern, low to the floor and made for smaller spaces.  I had in my mind that I would bring my favorite pieces into this new home and make them work by modernizing around some of the cool traditional elements of our new place.  I still think I can pull it off.  I just need to figure out the budget…UGH!  I have been spending a lot of time checking out Craigslist and Freecycle lately and I am determined to make this a showplace on very little.  Of course, I plan to share my adventures with all of you out there (all 3 of you that stop by) in blogland.  I was really hoping to challenge myself to redecorate with zero budget since that is what the Mister has proposed while we pay down on the new place.  I love his sensibility, but the “over the top” wallpaper around here is slowly killing me.  So, stop by once in a while to see how this all works out.  Oh yeah and I will be juggling the little guy while making this happen.  Now you ask, “what is she thinking?”

Tell me about your decorating or redecorating plans for 2010.  I wish us all luck in accomplishing our goals!
